Championing Sustainability: How Millennial Scientific Supports the SDGs

Climate change & sustainability initiatives are significant drivers that are reshaping industries. Advanced materials and manufacturing, directly or indirectly, influence all SDGs and thus could be considered essential for their accomplishment.

Our products and technology are connected to several SDGs and their corresponding targets. Below we elaborate on these connections. We can combined goals and targets when our contributions overlap.

We also explain how our approach could indirectly promote SDGs that are not directly related to our materials, products, and technology.

Goal 3

Targets

Goal 3. Good Health and Well-Being. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Target 3.9. By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination.

Target 3.b. Support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect developing countries, provide access to affordable essential medicines and vaccines.

Our Contributions to Goal 3 targets. Our separation materials allow the monitoring and remediation of hazardous chemicals, air, water, and soil pollution and contamination.

We are also solving New and Challenging Separations with new and improved performance capabilities required to improve the production of affordable medicines.

Goals 6 & 11

Targets

Goal 6. Clean Water and Sanitation. Ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Target 6.3. By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing the release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater, and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse.

Goal 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Target 11.6. By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.

Our Contributions to Goal 6 and 11 targets. We are mitigating the adverse effects of industrial activity by minimizing water usage, facilitating water reclamation and recycling, and removing heavy metals and other contaminants before wastewater discharge.

Goals 7, 8, 9, & 12

Targets

Goal 7. Affordable and Clean Energy. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

Target 7.3. By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

Goal 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth. Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

Target 8.4. Improve progressively through 2030, global resource efficiency in consumption and production, and endeavor to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in accordance with the 10-year framework of programs on sustainable consumption and production, with developed countries taking the lead.

Goal 9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation.

Target 9.4. By 2030, upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities.

Goal 12. Responsible Consumption and Production. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, which is key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations.

Target 12.1. Implement the 10-year framework of programs on sustainable consumption and production, all countries taking action, with developed countries taking the lead, taking into account the development and capabilities of developing countries.

Target 12.2. By 2030, achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

Target 12.4. By 2030, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, per agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water, and soil to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

Target 12.5. By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.

Target 12.6. Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

Our Contributions to Goals 7, 8, 9, and 12 targets. Our technology’s features and our products' physical and chemical properties facilitate resource and energy efficiency, operational simplicity, and health and environmental safety. These attributes increase environmental acceptability, and also promote the reduction, recycling, and reuse of materials, supporting a circular economy.

Our Contributions to Goal 13 targets. We espouse energy efficiency, circular economy to achieve climate transition, and impact. More energy-efficient separations could reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The circular economy plays a key role in reducing the demand for raw materials, their processing, and new products minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

Indirect Contribution(s) to other SDGs.

Our discovery and manufacturing of custom materials is based on concepts that minimize their impact on the environment, society, and the economy throughout their life cycle. This focus aligns with goal 14 - Life Below Water and goal 15 - Life on Land targets, devoted to preserving marine resources and protecting and restoring the ecosystems.

Our materials discovery is also connected to goal 4, Quality Education. The R&D activities on these materials are not only based on continuous materials improvements but also need to disseminate the results to the broader community to support sustainability policies.

In conclusion, the 2030 agenda for sustainable development was designed to achieve the SDG goals, balancing three dimensions of sustainable development: economic growth, environmental protection, and social inclusion. Our work showcases our approach and the opportunities our technology and products offer towards fulfilling these SDG goals.

This blog is part of our broader impact series, which provides an easy-to-understand overview of the implications of our technology and products on science, sustainability, and human health.
